FAN COIL UNITS | What Are They, Where and How Are They Used
What is a Fan Coil Unit?
A fan coil system is a water-based system. Hot water and cold water prepared at the central location are distributed to the fan coil machines installed inside the building. In this way, hot and cold air are provided.
What is a Fan Coil and What Does It Do?
In this water-based system, hot water is prepared in a boiler located in a separate area, while cold water is prepared in chillers. The operating principle of fan coil devices includes heat transfer surfaces containing a fan and coils. Air taken from the room passes over the coils by the fan, where it is heated or cooled. This process continues in a circulating manner. These systems are used for both heating and cooling processes.
How Does a Fan Coil Unit Work? Two-Pipe and Four-Pipe Fan Coils
If the coil used in fan coil systems is a single unit, the system is known as a two-pipe fan coil system. Here, distribution and collection processes are carried out through two pipes. One pipe serves for distribution, while the other handles collection. Thus, the system circulates either entirely hot water or entirely cold water, preventing simultaneous cooling and heating. While the system is practical, achieving the desired temperature during transitional seasons can be challenging.
